Are You Always On?

by Ryan on December 10, 2005

Just came across this article about cell phones, pagers, and family life. If you have a moment, I highly recommend you read it:

Cell Phones Are Disrupting Family Life

If you want the gist of the article, here’s the opening paragraph. It sums it up pretty well:

Cell phones and pagers, part of the technological revolution that was supposed to liberate everyone, is tethering people to their jobs to an unprecedented degree, to the point where family life is suffering.

I currently have a cell phone that I use very little. Still, the times I haven’t had a cell phone seem to have been more peaceful.

What about you—are you always on? Should you get rid of your cell phone or pager… or at least limit your accessibility?

Ryan, now we can check our EMAIL on our phones. I have a PocketPC Phone that has Web access. I love it because it helps me stay connected (I’m a minister, and that’s good for the church). But I am learning when voicemail is a good thing (especially when I’m having family time!).

As for email, I’ve been on vacation and haven’t checked it once in two weeks, and it’s been VERY liberating. I’ve been home this whole time, but I have had other priorities. I have about 200 messages waiting for me. It can wait until Monday!

Wow! You haven’t checked your email in two weeks?! Way to go, Kevin. :-)

I can go a weekend… but I don’t know about two weeks yet. (I’m 6 months into working from home, and I communicate with my clients through email.)

You should be proud of yourself.
