Do You Live in a Healthy State?

by Ryan on December 7, 2006

Is it possible to be healthy when you live with unhealthy people? Sure. Is it harder that way? Yes.

Speaking from experience, it’s much easier to live a healthy life when the people around you are committed to the same kind of lifestyle you are.

With that in mind, here is a link to an article that examines which States are the healthiest to live in and which are the least healthy. I thought Colorado would make the Top 5, but it must be somewhere below the Top 10 because it’s not mentioned as one of the healthiest States. You can read about the rankings here:

Minnesota deemed healthiest state, Louisiana worst

My state of Illinois is dead-center (#25).

But it’s also cited as the MOST IMPROVED. I guess my state is kind of like the ugly duckling that developed into –not a swan– but a mediocre duck.

The reports states the higher IL rank thusly:
The prevalence of smoking declined from 22.2 percent to 19.9 percent of the population. The percentage of children in poverty declined from 18.0 percent to 15.6 percent of persons under age 18.The infant mortality rate declined from 7.2 to 7.0 deaths per 1,000 live births.

Woo-hoo!

By the way, a big college town (near to where) I live just passed a city ordinance that waives the liquor license fee for any establishment that goes smoke-free. Which is AWESOME!

Hopefully 2007 will be our swan song!
